Shock Poll: 89% of Malawians Say the Country Is Headed in the Wrong Direction

A Nation in Crisis: Hunger, Hopelessness, and Economic Despair

A recent nationwide poll shows that 89% of Malawians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, with widespread dissatisfaction over economic hardship, corruption, and deteriorating public services under President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration. The survey reveals strong voter preference for the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM), who is seen as more competent and trustworthy, with Atupele Muluzi gaining significant support as a vice-presidential candidate. A majority of Malawians want to move away from donor dependency toward self-reliance and urgent political reforms before the upcoming September 2025 elections.
