The Youth’s Beacon of Hope in Malawi’s Political Landscape

The Youth’s Beacon of Hope in Malawi’s Political Landscape

Malawi’s youth are speaking loud and clear ahead of the crucial September 2025 elections. A recent national survey reveals that Atupele Muluzi is the most favored political figure among young Malawians, symbolizing a demand for fresh leadership and new ideas. The youth face mounting challenges that will have an effect on Malawi’s political future.

The Rise of a Youth-Friendly Leader

According to the Malawi Voter Opinion Survey 2025, Atupele Muluzi enjoys the highest popularity among voters aged 18 to 34, especially those supporting opposition leader Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM). Nearly half of young voters between 18 and 24 (47%) prefer Muluzi, and this sentiment remains strong among 25 to 34-year-olds (44%).

This trend reflects a broader call for generational change. Over half of survey participants (54%) agree that Malawi is held back by “old, tired leaders” and yearn for fresh, young leadership that mirrors the country’s youthful population. Muluzi, at 46, embodies this shift, blending youthfulness with experience.

What Sets Atupele Apart?

While Arthur Peter Mutharika remains trusted for his economic and governance credentials, Muluzi’s appeal is rooted in his modern, approachable image and deeply held values. His strongest trait, as affirmed by 44% of voters, is being “a man of God,” a distinction unmatched by other leaders.

Muluzi’s message resonates because it reflects integrity and public service—qualities young Malawians are hungry for amid political disillusionment.

Youth Realities Behind the Numbers

The survey goes beyond preference and highlights the severe hardships young Malawians are enduring:

  • 71% say their lives have worsened in five years

  • Youth unemployment, inflation, and high farm input costs remain dire challenges

  • Over 80% experienced hunger recently

  • 60% lacked access to basic medicines

  • One-third reported inadequate clean water

As one analyst put it, “This is a generation under siege—economically, emotionally, and politically.” It’s no wonder they gravitate toward leaders like Muluzi who “speak their language” and understand their struggles firsthand.

The Decline of President Chakwera’s Youth Support

In stark contrast, President Lazarus Chakwera’s favorability among youth is plummeting—his net rating sits at a staggering -34, the lowest among major leaders. About 70% believe his administration has made no progress since 2020, and only 18% feel he “cares about people like me,” compared to 82% for APM and 37% for Muluzi.

Political Coalition and the Path Forward

The survey also reveals political preferences beyond individual leaders. The favored coalition is a DPP-UDF alliance (32%), closely followed by the joint ticket of APM and Atupele Muluzi (34%). Youth voters especially believe this blend of experience and energy offers the best chance for economic revival and inclusive governance.

As a youth activist from Blantyre put it:
“Mutharika brings economic credibility, while Atupele speaks the language of our generation.”

The Bigger Picture: Hope or Lost Generation?

Beyond elections, the survey sends a stark warning: Malawi risks losing an entire generation to economic despair and political alienation. With 91% of voters distrusting the current government and 79% demanding an end to foreign aid dependency, the call for bold reform and accountable leadership has never been stronger.

Tendai Biti sums it up well:
“This is not just about elections. It’s about restoring hope to millions of young people whose future is being stolen by economic mismanagement and political stagnation.”

Conclusion: The Youth’s Voice Cannot Be Ignored

Malawi’s youth are no longer passive observers but active participants demanding change. Atupele Muluzi’s rise as the youth-favored leader highlights a clear desire for new leadership that listens, understands, and acts on the urgent needs of a beleaguered generation. As the September elections approach, political actors must take this message seriously—a nation’s future depends on it.
